Galerie Grand Siècle is going to present a solo exhibition of Mr. OGAY Table Mannersduring March 31st to April 28th, 2017. The opening party will be launched at 6pm on March 31st. Graffiti is often seen as a subculture derived from society, but undeniably in this time it performs a particular meaning of public art. Seeing himself as an angry young man filled with love, Mr. OGAY a well-known Taiwanese street artist fitting into both the countryside and city of Taiwan, showing the sincere concern for the motherland through his works The explicit naked man is the icon of his works. It is employed to interpret social issues, challenge institutions, and the interrelation between humans and environment. The whimsical connotation he plays with existing social value aims to provide a new perspective to contemplate on the inner nature of everything by excluding the superficially perceptible things on appearance. Table Manners by Mr. OGAY is initially conceptualized by the working experience as a server to ladle food to soldiers during the compulsory military service. The colossal waste of food he witnessed deeply influenced his attitude on food. To echo the solicitous concern, the spatial limit of the display will be challenged. Despite every year the ugly truth of food waste consecutively being reported by organizations globally, simply counting alone the food waste in 2016 caused by the wholesale convenient stores in Taiwan, it is nearly 40,000 tons, while around 930 millions of people under food crisis are suffering from malnutrition. The discrepancy contrastingly overturns the inherent ethics of the value of and the gratefulness toward food passed from the earlier generations. The deterioration of the uneven food distribution underlines the misfunction of the highly-developed society. This exhibition sorts out Mr. OGAY’s thoughts and past life experience connecting humans and food. The exhibited works are narrated by the novelty-seeking, bizarre, and ironic images with strangely familiar contemporary symbols that aim to inspect the social phenomena bred from the process of generation alternation, within which old and new values collide under the contemporary circumstances. Mr. OGAY starts to do graffiti since 2000. The endeavor to spread icons of explicit man qualifies himself to be the artist having the highest total of reports in Taiwan. So far, He has been invited to Japan, China, NY, and Thailand for graffiti making. The weird but eye-catching expression of current issues is favorably entertained by the contemporary art circle.
Table Manners-The Exhibition Introduction (murmuring) Ever since being kids, we have been taught everything about food. Especially the elderly would frequently remind us that food is the grace of God; we should know its value and be grateful for it. To me, food not only provides us necessary sources of energy for human survival, but also acts as a significant agent linking humans with Mother Nature. Through masticating, swallowing, digesting, and excreting, such biological processes enable human bodies to feel the miraculous flux of appetite. Since it is easier to get stuffed in the highly-developed society, people no longer feel grateful for food. Despite that every year one third of the food in the world is being wasted, hundreds of millions of people are suffering from starvation and malnutrition. Still some others would rather fill their stomachs with bad ingredients from chemically-processed foods produced by big companies, while complaining about the high price and poor hygiene of organic food planted by smallholder farmers. Only for satisfying the desire for taste, humans destruct the marine ecosystem by overfishing. In addition, brainwashed by the iconic foods or fashionable restaurants, media seems to have deprived our autonomy to choose food through the commercial-oriented broadcasting. Consequently, the more kinds of foods we eat, the less we feel connected with food. My concern for food resulted from a job I did during military service a few years ago— a server to ladle food to other soldiers. As a kitchen staff, I witnessed how serious and how gigantic the problem of food waste was in the military. My point on the issue of leftovers also got me in trouble as considered offensive by the senior. After these, my personal value on “food” was shaped. This exhibition sorts out Mr. OGAY’s thoughts and past life experience on the connection between humans and food. The exhibited works are narrated by the novelty-seeking, bizarre, and ironic images with strangely familiar contemporary symbols that aim to inspect the social phenomena bred from the process of generation alternation, within which old and new values collide. What’s more, it is hoped that these works call for more concerns on the environment.
