新苑藝術將於8月6日至9月5日隆重推出廖文彬的個展《使徒降臨》,開幕活動謹訂於8月6日(週五)。這是新苑藝術首次邀請廖文彬舉辦個展,也是廖文彬睽違八年的個展。這次他將帶來系列作品《使徒》手稿與角色插圖。
廖文斌早年以《少年黃飛鴻》打開知名度,近年完善並擴充構思二十年的使徒系列作品,並於去年出版漫畫《使徒》。《使徒》的創作本身突破自身的創作侷限,不同於廖文彬早期創作中,受本土文學作品影響的中華風漫畫。《使徒》蘊含大量歐美文化元素,引用聖經中墮天使的故事作為創作核心,並以紐約為背景的現代奇幻作品。
在混亂無序的反烏托邦世界,主角米開爾遊走在黑白之間,曾經的大天使與現在的陰間掌管使者,兩個看似背道而馳的身份中,存在的道德張力卻恰恰展現人類命運的常態——生活中沒有徑渭分明的正義或邪惡。廖文彬:「我試圖藉由主角的視野,讓讀者重新了解人類的本質是純真善良的,因為我們跟神鬼之間最大差異是愛。」
台灣漫畫家廖文彬,早年以數短篇漫畫刊載於永全出版《烏龍院》半月刊。1985年以改編自黃春明小說〈兩個油漆匠〉同名短篇漫畫刊載於《歡樂漫畫》正式出道。此後開始從事自由創作。創作出版龍少爺、少年黃飛鴻、電玩小子等12本漫畫單行本,其作品在華人地區廣受喜愛,曾在法國安古蘭漫畫節、美國聖地牙哥動漫展、上海當代藝術館等地展出。
Galerie Grand Siècle is pleased to present our new exhibition, ‘The Apostle Comes’ solo exhibition by Johnny Leo, which will be held from 6 AUG to 5 SEP 2021. The opening reception will be on 6 AUG. This is our first time to present Johnny’s work, and is also his latest solo exhibition long after his last exhibition 8 years ago. The exhibition includes manuscripts from the series Apostle and a number of character illustrations Johnny had drawn in the past 25 years.
Johnny Leo first gained his reputation through the series Young Master(少年黃飛鴻). Recently he finished Apostle, a series he spent over 20 years conceiving the stories and finally came out as a breakthrough in his narrative style. Unlike his early works influenced by Taiwan’s native literature, Johnny infused elements from the Western culture into Apostle: a fantasy inspired by the story of the fallen angel in Christian mythology, but the stage set in the modern New York city.
In Apostle, Michael the protagonist, who was an archangel and the current afterlife guardian of the underworld, wanders in a dystopian world of great chaos. His antithetical identities generate a moral tension which sheds light on the normality of human fate and calls into question the porous boundary between good and evil. There is no absolute evil or good. “Through the vision of Michael, I tried to convey to my readers that kindness is human nature” Johnny explained, “because the greatest difference between human and gods is love.”
Johnny Leo is a Taiwanese comic artist. In his early years, he published his short works on the bimonthly Oolong Courtyard(烏龍院). Later, in 1985, he began his career as a comic artist by serializing Two Painters (兩個油漆匠)on Joy Comics(歡樂漫畫), a story adopted from Huang Chunming’s novel of the same name. The artist had totally published 12 comic books including Dragon Lord(龍少爺), Young Master, and Game Boy(電玩小子), and his works have enjoyed popularity among Chinese communities. Johnny had participated in Animamix Biennial at MOCA Shanghai, 2009, and Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2018 and 2019.

廖文彬 使徒漫畫個展創作理念
雖然漫畫創作跟我個人過去的藝術創作不同,但我個人認為僅只是媒材的不同,或表現方式的差異。漫畫創作融合近幾年來個人對周遭人事物觀察的感動,本次個展將呈現個人全新的創作。每一部創作,亦可視為是藝術家當時生命的記錄。
漫畫應該不僅只是提供給青少年觀看而已,尤其在許多先進國家,漫畫的年齡層幾乎是涵蓋各個年齡,甚至有些作品還探討許多深奧艱深的議題。
我的這部作品最早創作於1996年,當時我剛剛結束一部長達數年的暢銷連載作品,一方面是有點厭倦這種商業炒作模式,另一方面則是想嘗試一下西洋風格的表現形式,因為一直以來台灣市場大都受東洋的漫畫影響,也許是文化較相異,使得歐美風格較不受重視。
而我則是因為從小曾在美軍眷村長大,周遭鄰居幾乎都是老外。他們後來紛紛撤回僑居地,將許多漫畫書送給我,那便成為我最早的漫畫啟蒙。
這篇漫畫品之所以取名使徒,主要是哪年我看了一部Wim Wenders導演的電影“Ernst Wilhelm ”(慾望之翼)深受感動而觸發我的創作。我試圖嘗試藉由漫畫的表現方式來表達﹕當天使被貶到人間後他的所見所聞,又由於他具有不死之身,看盡人間的生離死別……從麻木不仁到有一天突然對人類產生同情之心。
此時,他又受到撒旦化身說服誘惑進而成為一名陰間使者,負責將陽壽已近的人送往陰間。但由於他曾是天堂執法之天使,因此內心依然殘存天使的心,所以在執行陰間使者過程中常會縱放一些他認為善良的人。此舉卻惹惱了撒旦,於是便派出大批陰間使者展開一場大整肅……。
我的創作主要想探討兩個部分,一個是表面上,我們從主角的視角去看人類自身的世界:自私、忌妒、貪婪、…..反應人性的醜陋,另一個是讓讀者,從人的視角去審視神界和陰間人性面的對照。當我獨自進入社會這個大染缸時,那些爾虞我詐、逢迎拍馬,引發了我對於這個社會環境以及複雜的人際關係的強烈反思與追問,人與人之間常常需要提防,時時有所顧忌,太多的人情世故與左右逢源,人人活在假面之下,自己都忘了自己的原初為何?我想找回當初單純質樸,懷著赤子之心的自己,從而產生用隱喻對照的方式加上漫畫語言來描繪我所認知的世界,人人都帶著面具生活,愛與恨都不敢表達,尤其是當科技普及在我們的生活中,人與人間,即使是最親近的人,也必須藉由冰冷的媒介溝通。人們生活猶如行屍走肉般,缺乏一點生氣,只因為彼此失去信任、忠誠和愛,使得親子、夫妻、兄弟、朋友、主顧…….之間失去人情的溫度。
